Ferndale Photos
In the early days of Humboldt County, Ferndale was the principal town in the area. The monuments and survey records left behind by Joseph Shaw and others have been found to be very accurate and now form the basis of the city streets and lots. He was known locally as "Joe Shaw." Survey Photos
About a year ago, we decided to induct and train a survey dog. Her main role would be as a companion and a guard dog in the wilderness. The training has been relentless and worth the effort. That is why you will see her in so many of the photos that follow. She is a Finnish Lapphund and her name is Riikka. For more information about Riikka and Finnish Lapphunds, please click here. Local Survey History
In the 1800's, a survey crew consisted of a crew chief and at least six men. The instrument was usually a "Gurley" Transit and a "Gunters Chain." The township that Ferndale was located in, T2N R2W, also known as the Pacific Township, was first subdivided in 1858 by Federal Deputy Surveyor William Lewis. Lewis only surveyed the low flatlands of Ferndale at that time, finding the hills to the south of town "impracticable to run...in consequence of the broken nature of the ground." Years later, the remainder of the township was surveyed in 1875 by Humboldt's County Surveyor R. F. Herrick. Click on the link below to view photos: Survey History Photos |
